As the Director of JustFaith Ministries, my very favorite thing is being able to personally thank donors, facilitators, coordinators, supporters, partners, community members – anyone who has a hand in supporting our shared work of inspiring individuals and churches to work for peace, equity, justice, and sustainability. A close second to this is when I have the opportunity to share how YOUR support has made a difference and will continue to make a difference in the lives of people all across the country who have been impacted by your generosity.

This 2022 Annual Report “marries” my two favorite things. I hope you find yourself on the pages and know how grateful we are for you, and for all you do to make the world better. There is still much to do together: new issues to address, new opportunities for educating and inspiring individuals and small groups, new ways of multiplying the number of people who are addressing the root causes of injustice while serving with love. Thank you for your continued support and engagement in this important ministry.

Your Impact in 2022

JustFaith Graduates are making a difference around the country

In the fall of 2022, a group from the Loyola Jesuit Center in Morristown, NJ, began their second program of the Faith and Poverty series, Faith and Poverty: A Solidarity Response. As part of the program, they participated in an immersion experience to Bloom, a non-profit in Pennsylvania providing critical wrap-around services to women survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.

During the visit, their hearts were transformed. In a room full of women who had survived sex trafficking, they heard stories of how Bloom had empowered them and restored their dignity. They learned from the survivors that no home like this existed in New Jersey, and many of the women had to cross state lines to receive this kind of support. And they learned that all of the programs like this had long waiting lists for enrollment.

This JustFaith group decided that there needed to be a home like this in New Jersey. Since this transformative experience, they have been learning from Bloom’s sister organization in Nashville, Thistle Farms, which has created a playbook for how to effectively serve women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction.

Three participants from this JustFaith group are leading the effort, but every member of the 12-person group has been providing support - fundraising, helping to create a website, connecting with partner organizations in New Jersey, scouting sites for the future home of the program, and volunteering at Bloom to learn the intricacies of the program. They will soon be registered as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and have hopes of opening the home in a couple of years.

Meredith L., who co-facilitated the Faith and Poverty series and is one of three women leading this project shared that the JFM Faith and Poverty series “provided the foundation for understanding what the issues are. It facilitated a breaking open of the heart so that we were receptive…. The readings, formation, group discussions - all of these broke open our hearts. We then took that into an encounter with real people facing these challenges and it motivated us to do something.”

Throughout 2022, the JustFaith Ministries Board and staff spent a significant amount of time moving through the beginning of an anti-racism organizational change process. As a result of the process, we were confronted with new questions about our identity and "what is ours to do" (St. Francis of Assisi) in the world. In conjunction with the development of an anti-racist organization action plan, the Board and staff visited four main aspects of our identity. The end result of this work is the following four identity statements that lift up how we fulfill our mission and vision, how we embrace our values, and how you are invited to co-journey with us to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.
